Rivers of knowledge

Referencing old encyclopaedias, studio Zarate Insa’s pictorial label designs detail an olive oil brand’s evolution. By Montserrat Miranda Ayejes

Founded in Mendoza, Argentina in 1963 by engineer Alberto Zuccardi, Familia Zuccardi has established itself over the years as one of the world’s leading wineries. In 2004, as part of a plan to develop the region’s agricultural potential, Familia Zuccardi launched its first line of premium extra virgin olive oils that included four of the oldest olive varieties found in Mendoza.

The labels and packaging of Zuccardi Colección n3: La Ribera, the third release in a series of special editions showcasing the different regional oil varieties, were designed in 2018 by Zarate Insa, the Mendoza-based design studio founded by Guillermo Zárate and Matías Insa.

For the La Ribera edition, which is made from olives produced in groves located on the banks of the Mendoza and Tunuyán rivers in the north of Mendoza, the studio took the format of old encyclopaedias as inspiration, with each label presenting a short explanation of the type of olive and a description of the river, along with illustrations of the flora found in the area.

Making use of Tintoretto Gesso Greaseproof FSC, these elegant and colourful labels aimed to express the knowledge and experience Familia Zuccardi has in producing quality olive oils.
