When Peterston Tea, one of the first commercial tea farms in the UK, decided to expand their range of products to a line of small-batch premium kombucha drinks, they enlisted the help of Kutchibok, a studio founded by Siôn Dafydd and Alwyn Thomas in Cardiff. Peterston Tea, founded in 2018, is a Welsh company that the studio describes as being ‘rooted in family and nature – bringing to life all of the artisanal elements of its farm-to-table story’.
Kutchibok approached the design of the packaging with this idea in mind. Co-founder and creative director Siôn Dafydd says they wanted their ‘modern, minimalist, and confident design’ to celebrate the client’s close relationship with nature. The mixture of materials and print processes used on the packaging was driven by the green credentials and tactile nature of the Tintoretto line of papers. Dafydd states: ‘The paper texture – and the way the ink sits on it – became a crucial element. We wanted a label with a tactile, uncoated finish, and a quality paper stock to emphasise the tactile nature of the blind embossed pattern.’
Sustainability and environmental factors were key elements in the studio’s approach to the project. The bottle used for the kombucha is made of dark green glass that, according to Dafydd, ‘holds a higher percentage of recycled glass than that of a clear bottle’. HP Indigo digital printing was used to print the labels, a process that required minimal setup and produced less waste.
