A stimulating mix of design-led creativity from around the world.

The latest edition of Fedrigoni’s acclaimed, award-winning journal of people and paper is packed with a stimulating mix of design-led creativity from around the world. Pulp 25 features a fascinating interview with Chinese designer Jiaying Han (part of the jury for last year’s TOP Award) plus profiles featuring the design studios of Ana Freitas in Lisbon, Portugal and Zarate Insa in Mendoza, Argentina.

For more than three decades, Jiaying Han’s work has embraced branding, books, posters, exhibitions, packaging and much more. Pulp’s readers are in for a visual treat. ‘From a design perspective,’ says Han, ‘graphic design was the first booming industry in China.’

In ‘Let’s talk about clients’, three leading graphic designers, from South America, Europe and the US, meet for a virtual round table about the designer-client relationship. The designers are: Laurent Hainaut of Force Majeure in Brooklyn; Adele Bacci of Thomas Manss & Company in Florence; and Ismael Prieto of DEO in Santiago, Chile.

‘Bespoke know-how’ looks at Cordenons, now part of Fedrigoni Group, which dates back to seventeenth-century Italy. Now known as myCordenons, the company is a ‘lab’ for customisation.

This issue’s ‘One green thing’ article examines the vital role an LCA (Life Cycle Analysis or Life Cycle Assessment) can play in design and manufacturing.

Jiaying Han: Poster for Meiguang Printing House, 1992, then a printing industry pioneer, combines Picasso’s face with a face divination map, something recognisable by most Chinese people.
Holly Catford at Grafiche Milani in Milan.

Futura paper: This upcycling initiative combines the worlds of textile and paper production.
Ana Freitas: For independent brewery Rafeira (which translates as ‘mutt’), Freitas designed an identity in which each beer label features a different dog, 2016-19. Printed on Tintoretto Gesso FSC self-adhesive paper.

‘Blue Horizon’ focuses on a collaboration between Albini_next and Fedrigoni, an upcycling initiative that has resulted in the beautiful Futura paper we used for this issue’s outer mailing package.

As always, the magazine was produced by the award-winning team behind Eye magazine. Pulp 25 was printed under the supervision of Holly Catford at Grafiche Milani in Milan.

The issue’s pages were printed on Stucco Old Mill Premium White, Arena Smooth Extra White, Materica Terra Gialla and Freelife Cento Extra White Rough with Symbol Card Eco 100 for the cover.
