Designer Vincent Villéger explains that ‘plastic lamination was the main culprit’ in the earlier version of the Dunhill ‘packaging suite’, so he removed that. The project was a close collaboration between Villéger, Nirvana (see ‘It’s our choice‘), Fedrigoni and the brand, who took the unusual step of appointing an NPD [New Product Development] manager for packaging. Dunhill and Nirvana also used woven paper handles to avoid having a plastic core within the weave. He says that Dunhill was committed to ‘do things well’.
‘When you remove the laminate, you have to increase the paper weight to maintain structural integrity. Paper handles are more expensive, too,’ notes Villéger, who points out that this ‘smart global approach’ – including range design and negotiations – ‘mitigated the cost impact of improved sustainability credentials.’
