Budapest design studio Unger and Partners has been working with the Attila Gere Winery, based in Villány in southern Hungary, since 2017. During this time the studio has redesigned the winery’s main brand alongside its associated Crocus Hotel and Mandula restaurant and wine bar.
The winery’s latest product, the Attila Gere 2012 Library Collection, is a box containing four wines released in a limited edition of 184. Designed by Unger and Partners’s Szilárd Demján, the packaging is the result of a collaborative approach. ‘The most difficult task is the consistent high-quality execution of the brand’s image elements on different surfaces,’ says Demján. ‘For this, the designer, the customer and the manufacturer must work together.’
Unger and Partners developed a unique colour for the Gere Winery – Gere coral red – and a sample was successfully tested on Constellation Snow E/R55 Aida paper (115g/m2). According to Demján, the unique pattern style of the textured paper complemented the graphics and typography and was then used to cover the cardboard box. ‘We also designed a ring strap for the box, which closes it,’ he adds.
Reuse of the box was also encouraged via the approach to the design. ‘The inner punched compartments are not glued in place, they are removable, so that when the consumer has finished drinking the wine, they can store anything in the box and not throw it away,’ says Demján.
The elegant packaging, printed by Sz.Varians in Budapest, also features an inner gold border printed on Sirio Pearl Aurum paper (125g/m2) and gold hot foil stamping.
