Revelations of Trentino

Six international photographers demonstrate the beauty of this Italian region
Graphic designPhotographyPrintingPublishing

Trentino, in northern Italy, is known for its stunning mountain scenery in the Dolomites, including Lake Garda, and its rich cultural heritage and history. Since 2003, Trentino Marketing, the agency charged with promoting tourism for the region – officially the Autonomous Province of Trento – creates projects that highlight the culture and innovation of the area.

Trentino Unexpected is the agency’s collaboration with Gribaudo, a publisher owned by Italian company Feltrinelli. Gianna Zortea, media and press manager for Trentino Marketing, says it, ‘was born from a shared desire to create a major cultural project capable of portraying Trentino in a new and contemporary way through both a book and an exhibition’.

They chose six renowned photographers: Simone Bramante, Francesco Jodice, Gabriele Micalizzi, Roselena Ramistella, Massimo Sestini and Newsha Tavakolian. Zortea says: ‘The project aims to portray the region in an unexpected and original way, revealing not only the beauty of its landscapes but also its social transformations, roots, values and the people who inhabit it.’

The 208-page photography book, produced by Grafiche Antiga, features a range of photography, with sections that include Bramante’s The Power of Nature, Jodice’s Double Gaze and Sestini’s Other Worlds. With Fedrigoni as a technical partner, the book includes a variety of quality papers. Zortea refers to the book as a ‘true artistic object’, saying, ‘the paper itself becomes an integral part of the visual language’.

Alongside the book, an exhibition with the same name at the Mart in Rovereto (Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Trento and Rovereto) has been curated by artistic director of Stanze della Fotografia, Denis Curti, who also edited the publication. The exhibition, which showcases Trentino in a variety of ways, features six different rooms, one for each photographer. The exhibition will be hosted at the MUDEC in Milan from 21 November to 6 January 2026.
