Pulp celebrates ten years
Graphic designIllustrationInterviewsLabelPackagingPeople & PaperPhotographyPrintingPublishingSustainability
Art editor Holly Catford at Grafiche Milani in Milan.

This edition of Pulp celebrates ten years of Fedrigoni’s acclaimed journal of people and paper.

Pulp 27’s cover feature is a ‘People and paper’ interview with Margherita Porra, founder of Canadian studio Arithmetic, in which she discusses the idea of a ‘new luxury’, along with tactile materials and ingenious techniques.

‘Green Wave’ features packaging for the plant care brand, Sowvital, designed by French studio Leslie David.

‘Brazilian blooms’ looks at hand-made boxes for Vingt Creative Flower & Co., a flower delivery service that creates a ‘true act of gifting’ where the packaging has as much impact as the flowers.

‘Package deal’ highlights the history and work of Italian branding agency Auge Design. Talking with partner and Executive Creative Director Davide Mosconi, we look at a variety of award-winning packaging created by the agency.

In ‘Let’s get phygital’, John L. Walters interviews Fedrigoni’s Antonio Linardi about the company’s expansion with large format digital printing and RFID (radio frequency identification) tags. This invisible technology can connect the physical and online worlds, with implications for commerce, communications and end-of-use management.

‘Beneath the cover’ shows how Matej Vojtuš and Josefina Karlíková keep the Czech tradition of making beautiful books, with a focus on the harmonious connection between content and form.

Sowvital packaging, with text in French and English designed by Parisian design studio Leslie David, which has been working with the British company since 2020. The boxes use Sirio Color Milkshake.
The Vingt presentation boxes make use of the Sirio Color range, Constellation Jade and Imitlin Nero. The boxes have to be strong enough to protect their contents, to support the flowers without spoiling the arrangements.

Packaging for Good Juju, 2021. Porra: ‘We found a way to create these dehydrated bars that lather up just like a soap bar to wash and condition your hair. The client reduced the plastic; we took it to the next step to tell the story editorially. The insert is completely dissolvable corn.’ All product photography by Gabriel Cabrera.
Examples of Auge’s comprehensive 2021 rebrand of German biscuit manufacturer Bahlsen, which focuses on the company’s iconic signature.
