Founded more than 25 years ago by Marco Innocenti and Luca Parenti, Florentine design factory Kidstudio knows a thing or two about evolving with age. Recently, the studio helped historic Parmigiano Reggiano producer Malandrone 1477 redesign their packaging system with a bold and updated look.
Run by the Minelli family, Malandrone 1477 is unique in offering Parmigiano aged up to ten years and beyond, making it a pioneer in the field. Giovanni Minelli, together with his sons Carlo and Luca, decided to bring the Malandrone 1477 brand into the high-end retail world, and contacted Kidstudio for their expertise.
Using the wheel of Parmigiano as visual inspiration, the new packaging enlists a circular coding system developed along with the Minelli brothers. Parmigiano is typically categorised in months, so using a matrix, each circle on the face of the packaging represents twelve months of the ageing process. For example, the product aged 60 months, has five circles printed in black ink, signifying each year. Additionally, the system enlists a metallic hot foil for the Parmigiano with an exceptionally long maturation process, with foiled bronze, silver and gold circles for eight, nine and ten years, respectively.
The Italian artisanal printer Arte Stampa Montecatini produced the project, combining printing processes of silkscreen and offset, with the addition of the metallic hot foil.
Kidstudio founder Marco Innocenti says that this is just the start. Secondary packaging for the brand, such as seasonal boxes and bags will be launched in the near future. He says, ‘In early 2026 we will begin developing Malandrone’s premium lines – these will feature aging periods of up to 240 months (twenty years) and an even higher level of production excellence.’
