Vinyl in black

Estudio Ibán Ramón’s haunting vinyl packaging for composer Iván Llopis
Graphic designPackagingPrinting

Designer Ibán Ramón Rodríguez, who founded his own Valencia-based studio in 2001, worked with Spanish pianist and composer Iván Llopis to create packaging for his newest album. Listening to the album throughout much of the creative process,

Rodríguez says that ‘Nokepler is a concept album, a cinematic soundtrack chronicling a haunting journey – an inhospitable landscape, with no horizon, where sound is the only dimension’. He took cues from this concept for the design – not representing something static, rather something more complex – creating two different covers showcasing dual representations of the same abstract sequence.

Both versions of the cover have been screen printed on high quality black Fedrigoni paper. A silkscreened Nokepler title is present on the outer shrink wrap and once removed the text on the outer sleeve disappears. Rodríguez explained that he was very interested in materiality for this project – the touch was a defining factor in the selection of Fedrigoni Sirio black for the project.

Composer Iván Llopis draws inspiration for his sound ‘from multiple music genres to express his vision of an emotional limbus’. Llopis was raised in a family of musicians, and has been creating music since his early childhood, inspired by a vast selection of music – from Beethoven to John Coltrane. In 2007, he co-founded Banjo Soundscapes, his own creative sound studio from which he has collaborated with well known brands creating bespoke soundscapes for their campaigns.

Nokepler has been released in a limited edition of 300 – 150 of each cover.
