Caffeinated type

Updated packaging for a Florentine coffee roaster combines various typefaces to great effect

‘The goal of the restyling was to make the coffee packets aesthetically minimal and elegant, solely using fonts.’

D612 in Florence has been roasting coffee since 2016 with the aim of bringing a range of different products to the Italian market. To further the brand’s ambitions, Spaghetti Studio recently revived D612’s packaging, making use of a minimalist, type-only aesthetic.

‘The project was complex but at the same time stimulating,’ says Spaghetti art director, Baldassarre Canino. ‘The goal of the restyling was to make the coffee packets aesthetically minimal and elegant, solely using fonts. Any kind of geometry or illustration was prohibited.’

Spaghetti conducted a study based on typographic research that saw several different fonts combined within product names. ‘The biggest challenge was to adapt all these characters in multiple versions of names,’ Canino explains.

The studio used typefaces ABC Whyte and Inktrap (Dinamo), Grand Slang (North East), Restora (Nasir Udin) and Roboto (Christian Robertson/Google) for the final designs, mixing upper and lowercase lettering across the packaging.

‘To make the packaging artisanal and elegant,’ Canino adds, ‘we chose to use Tintoretto Neve – capable of giving that touch of naturalness we were looking for to convey our message.’
