Moon and the stars

The story of a Sardinian witch-goddess influenced the bold design for a new wine produced on the island
Graphic designPackaging

Heart Studio, a multidisciplinary practice based in Sardinia founded by designers Martina Silli and Bruno Savona, has designed the packaging for the first wine produced by Agrivinicola Sangiovannese, a small winery located in Sulcis in the south of the island.

Rajosa, a rosé, is described as having ‘an aroma of Mediterranean scrub, red fruits and strawberries with notes of aromatic herbs’, produced in small quantities via a manual harvest on a sand and clay-based soil that faces the sea.

Agrivinicola Sangiovannese’s hands-on approach to wine-making directly influenced the design of the bottle’s packaging – including pink lacquer to seal the cap.

The name of the wine refers to Rajosa, a mythical witch-goddess figure with connections to the moon, whose legend is known throughout Sardinia. According to the story, Rajosa was eventually transformed into stone. Today, a large menhir (or standing stone) known as Pedra de Lughia Rajosa can be found in the Sulcis countryside.

‘We reasoned on a radical, bold typographic sign printed on Fedrigoni Tintoretto Gesso self-adhesive,’ say the designers. This was enriched by the gold foil ‘which graphically interprets the starry sky from the Sulcis countryside; a tribute to the ancient cult of the moon and the connection with the heavens.’
