For this limited-edition wine, hellobarrio worked with a Turin-based illustrator to create a unique character for the label

Hellobarrio (see Pulp 22) designed the label for a limited edition run of less than 1000 bottles of Lazzarito, a Barolo wine born of the hills of the Langhe region in Piedmont, northern Italy.

The Alba-based design studio collaborated with the wine’s producer, Alberto Alessandria of Crissante Alessandria, and illustrator Annalisa Bollini to establish ‘a visual system that strongly breaks with Italian classicism,’ says hellobarrio’s Andrea Viberti.

The label plays host to a character called ‘Lazzarito’, a giraffe that ‘walks above tradition’, Viberti explains, and who ‘looks down on everything from paper hills and under a red sun’. Both Lazzarito and the collaged mound upon which the giraffe stands make great use of different printed textures.

Viberti says that the back label is also ‘a real visual experience: black on black. You have to look for information under the light – as if you were looking for something precious, in the shade of the giraffe.’

Bottles of Lazzarito are only available to buy from the Piedmontese establishment Guido Ristorante.
