Volcanic art

Nju’s award-winning labels for Villa Dora’s Terra Viva wines are inspired by the landscape of Vesuvius

Winemaker Villa Dora is situated on the lower slopes of Mount Vesuvius, the active volcano to the east of Naples. To reflect the area, and the volcanic soils in which the grapes are grown, Nju (see Pulp 03) took a dynamic approach to its designs for the vintner’s Terra Viva wines.

The Eboli studio’s challenge was to make reference to the unique location, while standing out from Villa Dora’s local competitors. Nju’s solution was to rethink the landscape of Vesuvius.

‘The overall design communicates the avant-garde, history and a sense of place,’ says creative director Mario Cavallaro.

The labels are inspired by the polygonal geometry of the rocks that make up the mountain and Futurist iconography – in particular the paintings of Giacomo Balla.

‘We used a different colour palette for each product,’ explains Cavallaro, ‘with print techniques that reflect the materiality of the rocks. Hot gold or silver foil elements play with geometric figures and recall the surfaces of the stones.’ Other influences on Nju’s designs include volcanos in art – from ancient etchings depicting the eruption of Vesuvius to Andy Warhol’s prints of the scene made in the mid-1980s.

The project took first place in the 2022 TOP Award label category.
