For the love of magazines

Both digital and physical, MagCulture has become an essential hub for the thriving indie mag world

Jeremy Leslie at MagCulture.

‘The pandemic made us realise how much we miss the indie magazine community’

MagCulture is many things, a physical shop in London’s Clerkenwell, an online store – where you can order copies of Pulp – and a conference.

Founded by Jeremy Leslie, an art director and editorial design consultant involved in magazines for more than three decades, MagCulture is a vital part of the independent magazine movement.

MagCulture’s online Journal champions the best magazines worldwide and profiles the people behind them. The London shop, in which print obsessives can browse and buy the latest titles, showcases publications that cover a vast array of subjects – from Orlando (Italy, art and culture) and Herdes (Spain, travel), through to MC1R (US, redheads) and Oof (UK, art and football).

‘The pandemic made us realise how much we miss the indie magazine community,’ says Leslie. ‘It’s been reinvigorating to catch up with real-life customers in the shop.’

The Clerkenwell space also hosts talks and workshops, while the MagCulture events calendar is crowned by the ‘MagCulture Live!’ conferences in New York and London.

‘Independent magazines are going from strength to strength,’ says Leslie. ‘Whether a small self-funded side project or a carefully planned business idea, the indies continue to thrill and surprise. There have been more new magazines launched recently than I can recall … and more customers keen to buy them.’

Recent copies of Pulp can be ordered directly from MagCulture’s online shop.
